UNESCO Has Recognised Grasse For Its Skills Related To Perfume Development

The savoir faire and skills related to perfume development in Grasse are now recognised by UNESCO and inscribed on the Representative List of the Intangible Cultural Heritage of Humanity. The process has been ten years in the making and is a result of efforts by The Association du Patrimoine Vivant du Pays de Grasse (Living Heritage Association of the Region of Grasse), encompassing a wide-ranging selection of groups and communities.

According to UNESCO three aspects were considered including :

  • the cultivation of perfume plants
  • the knowledge and processing of natural raw materials
  • and the art of perfume composition.

Grasse has a significant heritage in all aspects of perfumery. Traditions have been handed down generation to generation since the 16th century when leather tanning was a significant business in the area and floral blends were used to perfume leather gloves. The area is also known for its micro climate and its famed Rose Centifolia or Rose de Mai.

It is hoped that the inscription will help to protect the land and attract more growers and artisans to the region, thereby preserving and continuing the traditions, alongside new innovations and creativity related to perfumery.

Patrice Blaizot, Managing Director at PCW says that the UNESCO nomination is “well deserved recognition for the work and passion of our forebears but also a testimony for the future generations to come.”
